In or Out?

One of the biggest decisions this country has taken over the last few decades was to join the European Community. That was in 1969, followed in 1973 by a referendum called by Prime Minister Harold Wilson that saw 67.2% of the population vote to remain in the union. That was 42 years ago when the EU was a very different organisation to the one we are presented with today, and by anyone’s reckoning it is surely time to ask the electorate what they feel about continuing said membership.

The Conservatives have assured us of a vote should they be returned to power, whilst Labour have made no such pledge and much will depend on what cobbled-together coalition we end up with on May 8th as to whether we will actually get a chance to have our say.
