Lionel Hitchen

Founded in 1965, Lionel Hitchen Ltd is an independent, family-owned manufacturer of natural flavours and flavour ingredients for the global food and beverage industry. Operating from two sites in Hampshire, the business combines deep technical and manufacturing expertise with a strong sense of purpose and community. Today, Lionel Hitchen employs 160 people and is a significant contributor to the local economy.

While proudly rooted in the UK, Lionel Hitchen is firmly international in outlook. The business exports 85% of its sales, supplying customers in more than 60 countries either directly, through a network of 13 global distributors, or via its USA subsidiary. Its portfolio includes citrus specialities, herb and spice extracts, and bespoke flavours developed in-house to meet customer needs across multiple markets. As a B2B business, Lionel Hitchen partners closely with food and drink manufacturers, flavour houses and seasoning specialists around the world.

An ambitious and sustained growth journey

Over the past decade, Lionel Hitchen has embarked on a bold, carefully planned growth journey, achieving significant expansion, especially in export sales. This has been underpinned by a refreshed international sales strategy and geographic expansion through new distributor partnerships. Turnover has grown year on year, reaching £83 million in 2024, while significant reinvestment in facilities, equipment and people has ensured the business remains well positioned for the future.

A key feature of Lionel Hitchen’s success has been its decision to strengthen the business’s foundations before accelerating growth. This has included building capacity and capability across all functions, introducing sound and efficient processes and embedding a World Class Manufacturing (WCM) continuous improvement programme that actively involves every employee in driving efficiency, quality and innovation.

Innovation sits at the heart of this strategy. The business continually tracks global food trends and runs an intensive new product development programme to ensure its portfolio meets diverse regional tastes. In recent years, hundreds of new concepts have been developed annually, with a growing proportion converted into successful commercial products, strengthening competitiveness and supporting longterm growth.

People at the heart of performance

While the growth figures are impressive, Lionel Hitchen is clear that its people are the real drivers of success. As a family-owned business, it believes that sustainable growth is only possible when employees feel valued, engaged and supported. This philosophy is reflected in the Company’s culture, policies and everyday working practices.

Employee development is a central priority, and leadership capability is deliberately nurtured and trained using the Kouzes and Posner Leadership Fundamentals model, helping leaders translate theory into meaningful change in their teams.

Reward, recognition and wellbeing

Lionel Hitchen places strong emphasis on rewarding contributions and reinforcing positive behaviours. ‘The Hitchen Way’ rewards and recognition programme celebrates innovation, teamwork and going the extra mile, while promotion from within and referral incentives support talent retention and recruitment. The company also offers a highly competitive benefits package, including a generous profit-related bonus, competitive pension contributions, life cover, health cash plans and an electric vehicle salary sacrifice scheme.

These are supplemented by other, less significant but appreciated benefits such as Easter eggs, a hamper or a turkey at Christmas, frequent visits from ice-cream or pizza vans, vouchers to recognise employees who go above and beyond, off-site celebration days, and, most recently, a day off for birthdays.

Wellbeing and work-life balance are equally important. Hybrid working arrangements, flexibility around personal needs, generous annual leave (with options to buy more), cost-of-living support through above-inflation pay rises and Living Wage Employer accreditation all demonstrate Lionel Hitchen’s commitment to supporting employees both at work and at home.

This focus on people is clearly reflected in employee engagement and retention. In the most recent employee survey, 96% of employees said they were proud to work for Lionel Hitchen, with loyalty evidenced by long service across the business and a low unexpected turnover rate.

Building a sustainable future

Alongside commercial growth, Lionel Hitchen is committed to environmental and social responsibility. The Company publishes an annual sustainability report and has achieved Gold EcoVadis Awards, reflecting strong performance across responsible sourcing, sustainability and human rights. Longterm initiatives focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing onsite renewable energy, ensuring that growth today does not compromise future generations.

As Lionel Hitchen enters its next growth phase, with ambitious five-year targets aligned through its company-wide, audacious growth programme, one thing remains constant: growth is not pursued for its own sake, but as a means to create opportunity, invest in people and build a resilient, responsible business for the long term.
