If you’ve ever sipped from a reusable plastic bottle, heated leftovers in a plastic container, or cracked open a tin of beans, chances are you’ve come into contact with Bisphenol A - better known as BPA. For decades, this synthetic chemical has been a cornerstone of modern manufacturing. However, scientific evidence is painting a troubling picture of its effects on our health.

In April 2023, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) issued a stark warning: dietary exposure to BPA poses a health concern for consumers of all ages. After sifting through over 800 new studies, EFSA concluded that BPA can seriously harm the immune system, even at extremely low doses. This led the agency to slash the tolerable daily intake (TDI) for BPA by a staggering 20,000 times, from four micrograms per kilogram of body weight to just 0.2 nanograms.

 

What is BPA—and why should we care?

BPA is used in polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. It’s found in everything from water dispensers and food storage containers to the linings of canned goods and even some dental sealants. Unfortunately, this convenience comes at a cost. Chemicals like BPA can leach from containers into our food and drinks, leading to chronic exposure.

Despite breaking down quickly in the body, usually within hours, BPA doesn’t need to linger long to do damage. Its structure allows it to mimic the hormone oestrogen, enabling it to bind to hormone receptors and disrupt the endocrine system. This disruption has been linked to a host of health problems, including infertility, breast and ovarian cancers, metabolic disorders, and cognitive impairments. Recent animal studies reviewed by EFSA also show that BPA affects white blood cells, which are crucial to immune defence and potentially trigger inflammatory conditions and autoimmune diseases.

 

The science—and the scepticism

In its most recent re-evaluation, EFSA took a systematic approach. Dr. Claude Lambré, chair of the Panel on Food Contact Materials, said the group scrutinised a “vast quantity” of scientific literature to address uncertainties that had plagued earlier assessments. Findings included increased levels of T helper cells—vital immune system players - which could lead to allergic lung inflammation or autoimmunity.

While European regulators are responding decisively, not everyone is convinced. Across the Atlantic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration continues to deem BPA safe for food contact, maintaining a regulatory stance that hasn’t kept pace with evolving science. This regulatory gap leaves many consumers unknowingly exposed.

 

A game of chemical whack-a-mole

As awareness of BPA’s dangers has grown, manufacturers have increasingly turned to substitutes like Bisphenol S (BPS) and Bisphenol F (BPF). Unfortunately, early research suggests these chemicals may be just as harmful, if not worse. BPS, for example, has already been identified as an endocrine disruptor and reproductive toxicant, and has been detected in the urine of over two-thirds of European adults.

This trend, known as ‘regrettable substitution,’ is cause for serious concern. Rather than solving the problem, replacing BPA with chemically similar alternatives may shift the risks without reducing them. In 2022, EU regulators added BPS to the REACH Candidate List of substances of very high concern, and experts now argue for regulating bisphenols as a group to avoid these chemical shell games.

 

Avoiding BPA: A modern challenge

Completely avoiding BPA in today’s plastic-saturated world is nearly impossible. It’s not listed on product labels, and its presence is invisible without lab testing. Yet there are practical steps we can take to reduce our exposure:

• Swap plastics for glass or stainless steel wherever possible, especially for food and drink storage.
• Don’t microwave food in plastic containers. Even BPA-free plastics can degrade and release chemicals under heat.
• Look for recycling codes 1, 2, or 5 on plastic products; these are less likely to contain BPA.
• Change out of synthetic workout gear promptly, especially after sweating. BPA has been found in polyester clothing and can be absorbed through the skin.
• Avoid polyester and spandex and any other fabric made with plastic.
• Follow the “grandma rule”: if a material wasn’t around when your grandmother (or great-grandmother, for some people) was young, it may be worth avoiding.

 

The bigger picture

BPA is just one of many chemicals in the modern “alphabet soup” of potential pollutants, alongside PFAS, PCBs, and others. It is not just a relic of industrial chemistry - it’s a modern-day health issue that spans generations and continents. The science is increasingly clear: even low-level exposure can have serious health implications.

For now, the best protection is awareness. While total avoidance may be unrealistic, informed choices can significantly reduce your daily exposure and, in turn, your long-term health risks.
